Little Steps To The Horizon
A personal reflection on goals, passion, and the uncertainty of choosing a direction. The post argues for small, steady steps instead of waiting for perfect clarity.
Not so seldom sprouts a rather serious conversation, and words like "passion", "goals", "purpose" hit your ears. Questions from far and wide pour in, waiting to be answered. Why do we do what we do? What does the future entail? Am I on the right path? Why do we exist? What is the purpose of our existence?
The answers do exist, for certain people have found them in the past. You just need to know where to look. And more than often, the answer lies within you.
It may sound rather abstract, but it is true. You are what you do and the choices you make. Other individuals can play a part in it, but the steering wheel is in your hands.
Darwin's Theory of Evolution does apply to humans as well, but not in the classical sense. It has been tokenised in the form of a currency of trade - money. Another factor that plays a role in this process is luck.
Certain individuals are lucky enough to be doing what they love doing and be paid for it. Others, not so much. While each of them has a different path, in my opinion, the one that leads to a better survival is also the one that makes you happy.
The next question arises: What makes you happy? Again, each one has a different answer. But if you look deeply, there are in fact two questions: What can I do to be happy today, and What can I do to be happy tomorrow? For me, the important one is the former.
But sometimes, there is a feeling of doubt that makes the happiness go away. Something that made you happy yesterday does not make you happy anymore. Or perhaps the journey you began some time ago with all your courage and excitement has reached an arduous path. What should you do then? Go back and quit? No.
What you need to do instead is believe. Believe in yourself, in your path. Some paths can seem hard at times, and can break your momentum and motivation. When that happens, stop everything for a moment and think. This is what made me happy earlier, but what about now? Its time to look back with a sense of gratitude. The path you took made you happy earlier, but now it is wearing out. If you personify the goals that made you happy, would you choose to let them down in hard times and bury them under rocks of ignorance?
You could, if you choose to, but you would rather brace up and face the challenge as it comes. And in the not so distant future, you will find yourself happy again.
As someone wise once said "If there are no ups and downs in your life, you're probably dead."
Of course, before you walk on a road, you have to pick one, and there are far too many to choose from. Again, the choice is subjective and is different for each individual.
When picking your passion, there are certain questions you must ask yourself. Do I love doing this? Is this what will make me happy? Will I want to keep doing this even if the times are hard? Would I want to do this for the rest of my life?
If the answer to all of those questions is Yes, congratulations, you have found your passion. If you have not found it yet, don't worry. As with all good things, it will take time. Be patient. But keep looking, and don't settle until you find it. When you do find it, your life will be unlike anything before, and you will eventually reach for the horizon.
I'll end this post by echoing the words someone else echoed at a graduation ceremony:
"Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish"
