GRAVEFIRE: The Story in Chapters
A chapter-by-chapter outline of the GRAVEFIRE storyline, told as an alternating timeline that cuts between the burned present and the world before the grave fire.

For a long time GRAVEFIRE existed as scattered lore: a timeline, a map, character backstories, monster notes. This post is my attempt to pull all of it into a single narrative shape and tell the story the way it would read as a novel.
The structure is an alternating timeline. Odd chapters happen in the burned present, where the four survivors wake into the aftermath of the grave fire. Even chapters reach back into the world before the fire, where the same characters lived ordinary lives and the catastrophe was still only a prophecy. The two threads move toward each other until they meet at the center of everything: the Carnival of Doom.
Before the world burned, the Zebathen Empire's Grand Carnival stood on the borders of the Great Lake. Among its fortune-tellers was a gloomy man known only as Crow, who told the absolute truth wrapped in riddles. He kept one prophecy for himself: an age of strife and anguish, with only the smallest sliver of hope beyond it. A prophecy of a grave fire.
When the flames came, they did not reduce Crow to ash. They changed him. He walked out through the shattered gates of the Carnival with a black scythe in his hand and the whispers of the dead in his ears, no longer a fortune-teller but a Necromancer. He had foreseen all of it.

Crow wakes in a charred forest, hearing the whispers of the dead. A spirit called the Messenger guides him and helps him understand that he is no ordinary survivor: he kept some of his identity while others became mindless undead. The Messenger pushes him toward the Carnival of Doom and promises answers about the devastation.
In the burnt woods he meets Isenbardus, once a great knight of the Empire and now a tree spirit guarding the forest's last remaining heart. The old knight speaks in riddles that hint at both an ending and a new beginning.
Years before the fire, the Grand Carnival is a place of celebration and wonder. Crow watches over the festivities as its strangest attraction, renowned for prophecies that always come true. His most dire prediction, a world-ending fire, he keeps to himself. An ominous shift in the air tells him that the prophecy is finally approaching.
Skull wakes with his face pressed into the cracked earth of the Garden of Thorns, once famous for its roses and sacred thorns, now a barren wasteland. His armor is scorched and his memories are disjointed. Driven to learn why the fire spared him and what became of his homeland, he hears rumors of the Carnival of Doom and sets out, believing it holds the answers.
Two years before the grave fire, Skull witnesses the earthquake that devastates the Motonian capital of Cliften. The kingdom's strength crumbles in front of him. His faith in Motonia's ability to withstand future threats begins to break as whispers of dark magic spread through the realm.
Blade, the rogue, moves through the treacherous Howling Chasm of Eryndor, pursued by shadows born of the grave fire. The mountain sanctuary that once kept Eryndor's scholars apart from other kingdoms has been tainted like everywhere else. Blade is hunting ancient Eryndorian knowledge that might explain the fire's origins, and learns of an old legend tying the Carnival of Doom to the disaster. The trail points toward the Carnival.
In the years before the fire, Blade studies as a mystic under Father Francis, a spiritual guide who warns that the kingdom's obsession with forbidden knowledge will lead to catastrophe. When Father Francis vanishes, Blade begins searching for answers and grows skeptical of Eryndor's secrets.
Morana roams the devastated lands once known as Aurelia, now the Ashen Dominion. Her power over life and death makes her both feared and revered. She senses the others — Crow, Skull, and Blade — drawing near her domain, and her connection to the dead reveals that the true source of the grave fire lies beyond the Ashen Dominion, in a place tied to all four survivors.
Before the fire, Morana is an enigmatic figure on the fringes of Aurelia, an alchemist whose visions show the coming flames. She is powerless to stop them. Her own transformation is bound to the catastrophe, and when the vision of fire swallowing the world is fully realized, she prepares for the aftermath that will leave her cursed and gifted at once.
The four survivors finally meet among the twisted remains of the Carnival of Doom. A place that was once full of joy is now a macabre battleground echoing with the past. They fend off horrors reanimated by the fire as they explore the Carnival's dark secrets. Morana reveals that their fates are linked, and that the key to ending the grave fire may lie in finding its true source.
The final flashback unravels the Carnival itself. As the leaders of Zebathen experiment with forbidden magic, Crow's prophecy creeps closer to reality and whispers of a grave fire spread among the nobility. The chapter ends at the moment the fire is unleashed, devastating everything in its path, and reveals the survivors' last moments before the flames — and how each of them came to be spared.
The alternating structure lets the present and the past arrive at the same truth from opposite directions. In the present, the survivors are strangers to their own pasts, piecing together a world that no longer makes sense. In the flashbacks, that world is whole, and the fire is only a rumor a single gloomy man refuses to repeat.
Both threads close at the Carnival of Doom, because that is where the story always pointed. It was the center of the Empire's joy, the stage for Crow's prophecy, and the ground where the grave fire finally caught. The survivors do not just gather there. They return to the place where everything ended, to find out whether anything can still begin.
